I only know one man who doesn't work, who's wife supports the entire household. So my sampling isn't very large. To that point though, we never really made a big deal about it. I did question why he wouldn't want a career, but his wife makes a really good living as a Colonel in the Army, and they end up having to move every 3 years anyway. It made sense to them to support her career over his. He doesn't sit around though, they usually buy homes that need fixing, and he does all of that work.

But to answer the "why" in your question... it's because of self-esteem and insecurity.
