Title: When to add ads on blog?
Post by: wzhang18 on November 16, 2018, 07:47:00 PM
Hi, I'm planning to build a blog. One question I have is the timing of adding ads (e.g. Google Ads) for some income. Given that the blog is brand new, I don't expect any income at all in the beginning. But shall I still install the ad ad-on or wait til when I have some stable audience?

Thanks.

Add your ads ASAP. It's your blog and you deserve to earn and experiment. Get readers accustomed to ads. Ads are the way free content producers make money, so don't be ashamed.

Sam,
I read an article about 350 bloggers where only 8% of the 350 bloggers were making more than $10,000 / year from their blog. Of the remaining 92%, the majority (69% of the people interviewed) were earning zero. Another survey by Convertkit revealed a simliar statistics. Their survey reported that 15% of the bloggers earned more month than the median United States household income. Whereas, the average profit for the remaining 85% was $9,497.

Sam, do you agree with those stats? I know that you very big on providing factual stats on the top 1% of networth and household income, but it seems like the odds of becoming a successful blogger is extremely difficult. The greatest advantage is the low cost of starting a blog business but very few can make enough to support a career out of it. Since there isn't job title for a blogger vs CPA, software engineer, and financial advisor we can look up on www.payscale.com. I am assuming that the median full time blogger income is between $17,000 - $20,000 / year, way below the median household income in the U.S. To generate $500,000 in revenue / year as a full time blogger, I think that you will need to be in the top 5% of the top 1%. Seems that many have the false mindset that becoming a pro-blogger like yourself is not too difficult, but I would say that it is extremely difficult, where only the top 1-3% bloggers can make a living off of blogging income full time.

What are your thoughts about the blogger stats? Do you agree?

Hard to say PandaAtlanta. Like everything good, it does not come easy. Gotta work at it.

Of course if you want to be in the top 1%, you've got to mathematically beat out 99% of your competition. That's damn hard for sure.

Creativity, good niche, and consistency are the keys.

I made a promise to publish 3X a week for 10 years in a row. But here's the thing: 99% of the people who started blogs in 2009 are not around. So is that creativity and being in a good niche? Or is it plain old grit and consistency that has allowed FS to grow?

That is a cool advice. I have relatively new blog and I will start to play ads on it very soon, because I want the readers to get used to those. Although I'm pretty sure I won't make any money from those ads any soon.
