I, Sam Dogen, have been a storyteller since launching Financial Samurai in July 2009. Since then, I’ve published three posts a week, every week, sharing personal stories and anecdotes as they relate to personal finance.
Over time, Financial Samurai has grown into one of the largest and most trusted independently-owned personal finance sites in the world, with over 500,000 organic pageviews a month.

As the pioneer of the modern-day FIRE movement, I’ve built this platform largely on my own, with support from my wife and father, who used to edit all of my posts. Today, with the help of AI, I manage virtually everything myself – from writing and editing to marketing, SEO, and business development.
If you’re looking for a creative storyteller, a self-starter, a hard worker, and someone with deep expertise in personal finance to grow your business, you’ve come to the right place. Feel free to explore the 2,500+ articles on Financial Samurai.
And if you’re interested in hiring me as your Head of Storytelling, you can reach me at financialsamurai AT gmail DOT com.
I’m based in San Francisco and would be happy to connect. With 13 years of experience at Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse, along with consulting work for fintech companies such as Empower, formerly Personal Capital, I bring the expertise you’re looking for.
The Importance Of Hiring A Head Of Storytelling
If you spend any time paying attention to how companies communicate today, you’ll notice something interesting: storytelling is no longer a “nice-to-have.” It’s becoming a core executive function.
LinkedIn job posts for “Head of Storytelling” have doubled in the U.S. in just the past year. The Wall Street Journal recently highlighted the trend:
- Compliance technology firm Vanta is hiring a Head of Storytelling with compensation up to $274,000.
- Notion merged communications, social, and influencer marketing into a single 10-person “storytelling team.”
- Fintech brand Chime opened its first role for a Director of Corporate Editorial and Storytelling.
Different companies. Same realization.
The earned media landscape is shrinking. Distribution channels are exploding. Algorithms are fickle. Audiences are fragmented. Trust is scarce.
So companies are doing what individuals have been doing successfully for years:
They’re going direct.
And when you go direct, you need someone who understands not just content, but narrative, cadence, credibility, and trust over time.
That’s storytelling.
I’ve Been Running A Storytelling Engine Since July 2009
I didn’t get here by accident.
I launched Financial Samurai in July 2009, in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis, with no outside funding, no distribution advantages, no team, and no playbook. All I had was a belief that people wanted honest, lived-experience storytelling about money, work, family, and freedom.
Since then:
- I’ve published 3–4 times a week, consistently, for 16+ years
- I’ve built a standalone brand that generates 500,000+ pageviews per month
- I’ve done this solo for most of its existence
- I’ve survived every platform shift: SEO changes, social changes, AI, newsletters, video, audio, and back again
No gimmicks. Just real life, personal stories, and stories from people I encounter to help address some of life’s most pressing questions.
That is what companies are now trying to institutionalize.
Storytelling Is Not Just Content. It’s Also Strategy.
What these new roles reflect is a deeper truth:
Storytelling is not:
- PR
- Social media
- Influencer marketing
- Editorial
- Events
It’s how all of them work together.
Storytelling answers:
- What do we stand for?
- Who is this for?
- Why should anyone care?
- What problem are we actually solving in a human way?
- How does every channel reinforce the same narrative arc?
At Financial Samurai, almost every article fits into a larger story:
- about financial independence
- about tradeoffs
- about ambition vs contentment
- about parenthood, risk, and responsibility
- about building optionality in an uncertain world
That coherence is why people keep coming back year after year. Over my 16+ years of experience in storytelling, I’ve proceeded to write two national bestsellers:
- Buy This Not That: How To Spend Your Way To Wealth And Freedom (WSJ bestseller)
- Millionaire Milestones: Simple Steps To Seven Figures (USA TODAY bestseller)
Earned Media Is a Bonus. Owned Narrative Is the Asset.
I’ve been featured in essentially every major media outlet you can think of – CNBC, Bloomberg, The New York Times, WSJ, Business Insider, and more.
Most recently, Business Insider produced a video feature on my approach to saving, investing, and raising a family. You can check out the rest of my media kit here, highlighting features in the New York Times and more.
But here’s the key distinction: Media exposure is rented attention. A direct audience is owned trust.
Financial Samurai doesn’t spike and disappear. It compounds. That’s the difference between “campaign thinking” and storytelling leadership.
Storytelling Is a Human Act and a Service
Here’s the nuance often missing from corporate discussions: Storytelling is not about the company. It’s about the audience.
At Financial Samurai, I don’t publish to impress. I publish to:
- help readers make better decisions
- feel less alone in their anxieties
- understand tradeoffs before they’re forced to make them
- gain clarity where institutions often provide noise
That orientation, service over spin, is why the brand has lasted for so long, and how I can help build your company’s brand.
And it’s why storytelling roles are emerging now. People can smell marketing. But they still lean into stories that respect their intelligence.
What I’d Bring As A Head Of Storytelling
If you’re building or evolving a storytelling function, here’s what I bring:
- Proof of endurance: 16+ years, no breaks, no burnouts
- Narrative architecture: not just posts, but arcs and themes
- Distribution fluency: owned, earned, organic, algorithmic
- Editorial instinct: knowing what not to publish
- Founder empathy: understanding risk, reputation, and trust
- Audience-first judgment: the hardest skill to teach
Looking Ahead to 2026 And Beyond
The rise of “Head of Storytelling” tells me companies are finally acknowledging what independent creators have known for a decade:
The story is the strategy.
If you’re a startup or established company thinking seriously about:
- owning your narrative
- going direct
- integrating content, comms, brand, and trust
- and doing it with credibility, not hype
I’d love to talk. Shoot me an e-mail or leave a comment on one of my posts and I’ll get back to you.

Whether you’re long or short on the storytelling role, one thing is clear:
The companies that win will be the ones that tell the clearest, most human stories consistently, over time.
I’ve been doing exactly that since 2009.
Regards,
Sam
