The Turtle Ship Book Review: Illustrated By Colleen Kong-Savage

The Turtle ShipThe Turtle Ship Book Review is a beautiful children's book illustrated by Colleen Kong-Savage, the illustrator who came up with the latest version of my Samurai Mask logo.

Colleen has been working with me on various commissioned artworks for Financial Samurai since 2013 and I'm extremely proud of her very first book.

What's absolutely incredible about The Turtle Ship is that Colleen painstakingly illustrated the book using paper collages. She used Korean hanji in the landscape, Egyptian papyrus for the Turtle Ships, Mexican Amate as the court floors, and Italian crepe for the pine needles. I had no idea there were so many different types of paper!

Her paper collages give the book an incredibly rich texture and depth. As a father of a 14 month old boy, I'm used to just reading books with drawings and paintings, which now seem so boring in comparison. The way Colleen arranges the different types of paper and colors is magnificent.

Pay attention to the facial details of the characters in her book as well. You can see joy, playfulness, consternation, doubt, hope and love that will capture the reader's attention. Colleen's book is a work of art that took about a year to create. Every page looks like it could be framed and hung on a wall.

My son smiling and enjoying The Turtle Ship

Author Helena Ku Rhee does a wonderful job telling the story of a young boy named Sun-sin who dreamed of traveling around the world with his pet turtle, Gobugi. The story is for all the dreamers out there who believe anything is possible with a little bit of courage and ingenuity.

I love The Turtle Ship because I myself am a dreamer who left work behind at the age of 34 to be a full-time online writer. It was a scary leap of faith, but so far so good six years later. I hope my son follows his dreams as well. Half the battle of succeeding is simply believing you deserve to succeed.

I look forward to working with Colleen on future Financial Samurai illustrations. You can visit her portfolio of artwork at KongSavage.com.

You can buy your version of The Turtle Ship on Amazon here. The book is in extremely high demand so it's better to order sooner, rather than later. The Turtle Ship can be enjoyed by babies, kids, and adults of all ages.
